This May is full of Training opportunities - take a look!

Tuning in to Teens - Emotionally Intelligent Parenting program for parents of adolescents.

Michael Bourke, Allambi’s Adolescent & Family Counsellor, will be running a Tuning in to Teens training for any interested Carers.

Tuning in to Teens shows you how to help your teen develop emotional intelligence. Adolescents with higher emotional intelligence:

  • are more aware, assertive, and strong in situations of peer pressure
  • have greater success with making friends and are more able to manage conflict with peers
  • are more able to cope when upset or angry
  • have fewer mental health and substance abuse difficulties
  • have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults
  • have greater career success
  • Emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ!

This training will be run through the day and only if we have enough people interested. If you have a teen who needs help, or you need help with your teen, contact your Caseworker for more information.

Book Review: What is LGBTIQA+SB

"This guide is for everyone who has seen all these letters, didn’t know what they meant, and maybe didn’t know how to ask.”

image007What an amazing asset we have just sitting on the bookshelf of one of our Sexuality and Gender Inclusivity and Diversity Committee members!

Here I am, just an old Gen-X’er who cannot deny that each second that clocks ticks, I am getting out of touch. I recall giving my parents a lot of stick back in the day for just the same thing. I would like to think of myself as progressive and accepting of others just as I was raised to be, but am I? You see, I am a heterosexual man who has very little to do with the Rainbow Community.

So, I walk into the committee members office, take a seat without being invited to, and ask for a book recommendation. I was made to feel so welcome and through their bookshelf they went giving me a book that needs to sit right beside “Where did I come from?” in every school and local library.

Pronouns are very important to everyone, and it is on this basis that this book is brilliant. I have fallen behind the times and ignorance is NOT bliss, it definitely is not progressive, and it is not showing acceptance of those different to myself. I cannot top the description the Black Rainbow gives their book “What is LGBTIQA+SB?”:

“This guide is for everyone who has seen all these letters, didn’t know what they meant, and maybe didn’t know how to ask.”

There are 27 pages that help us as one loving community understand pronouns and why this is so important to the Rainbow Community. This book will help a primary school aged person all the way through to Boomers. If you would like to borrow this resource or find another resource do not hesitate to contact the committee as I did.

Love & Acceptance from a grumpy old Gen-X’er.

Become a carer for teenagers

myforeverbanner

Carers are urgently needed to care for older children and teenagers. My Forever Family is running an online Information Session in the hope of urgently finding Carers for these young people, ensuring that in care, they can thrive and continue to form strong bonds with their families and community.

Do you know of anyone who has the time and skills to provide a safe place for a teenager? Someone who understands what it’s like to navigate homework, sporting commitments and teen-related issues? DO you have the capacity for this?

Register for the online session on Tuesday 23 May, 7pm-8pm by using this link:

Monthly Book Review

by Marie Lawrence - Fostering & Permanency Systems Admin

robert_jordan

I love escaping into a good read, especially if it's in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. The books that I am currently reading is “The Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jordan. It was written not long after the Lord of the Rings series, and 14 books long plus a prequel… PDF versions can be found online, otherwise second-hand bookstores or it can be bought as a boxed set. Elements from the first and second book have been combined into the series of the same name on the Amazon Prime streaming service.

The series follows a prophesied character, set in a world that is in the third age where magic is relatively lost. But as the wheels of time move and spins the pattern of the ages, the magic can be channelled by males – Saidin and females – Saidar, who work in opposition and in unison to drive the wheel. The Creator imprisoned the Dark One at the moment of creation, however the seals are breaking, allowing his influence to seep back into the world. The prophesied main character is lead on a journey to other countries, gathering many other characters to him, influencing other characters, defeating the Dark One’s Forsaken, fulfilling prophecy, while still maintaining his humanity.

It is a rollicking good read, if very complex. If you love other worlds, magic and intricate stories, then this is the read for you. (…and I am up to book 7 since January 2023).
