Partnerships create sustainable community options

Partnerships have been at the heart of what Allambi Care does every day since it was established in 1981.

These partnerships have enabled us to create an organisation that supports about 2,000 people in our region every day through services that include foster care, helping young people connect with their communities and programs that help keep families together.

It is this same philosophy that delivered another partnership that we hope will not only help us reduce our environmental footprint, but will also champion an option for many others in our region to do the same.

A few months ago, we started working with the team in the City of Lake Macquarie about our desire as an organisation to use innovations in renewable energy.

The result was the opportunity for Allambi to tap-into a partnership that Council was establishing with an energy cooperative creating a first for the Hunter region.

Allambi in association with Lake Macquarie City Council and a member-owned solar technology company called Pingala, are now working with around 200 other stakeholders from the local community to co-fund solar panel infrastructure that will ultimately provide an environmentally friendly energy option while an ongoing benefit to investors. Allambi will pay for the electricity the new solar panel system produces and the community investors will receive a dividend for their investment.

As an organisation that exists to support our community we are always looking for opportunities to reduce our costs, but in 2019 that is also about treading a little more carefully within our environment.

The initiative fits well with our commitment to being a modern and sustainable organisation and reducing its energy footprint.

We consider this partnership a good model that demonstrates how our region’s local businesses and residents can partner with local government to contribute to deliver smart and sustainable solutions.

If you would like to find out more, please visit allambicare.org.au/solar.

Simon Walsh, CEO

As an organisation we are extremely lucky to have Clinical Psychologist, Howard Bath, as part of our team. Howard recently ran training for Foster Carers, School Teachers and Staff that looked at how the experiences of abuse, neglect and seeing family violence, affect the way children think, feel and behave.

Howard reviewed what we know about the impact on their developing brains and how their lifetime prospects for learning, connecting with others, and enjoying life differs from their peers.
In particular, Howard explored how these children deal with stress and anxiety, how this can affect their relationships with peers, and how it can affect us as carers.
Using videos, slides and handouts Howard illustrated the research findings and explored how these findings affect the way we understand the children we care for and how we can best help them cope with the legacy of their early experiences. Teaching staff from Beresfield Public School and Edgeworth Public School attended the training.

Children's University at Allambi Care

Allambi Care recently held the official registration day for the ‘Children’s University’, a program run through Newcastle Uni and local schools. This year the program opened up to five NGOs in the Hunter as a pilot program. Allambi has been lucky enough to be one of the five NGOs selected.

Children's University Newcastle encourages children between the ages of 7 and 14 to be curious learners by participating in validated activities beyond the school curriculum. The program is designed to engage children in learning in its broadest sense and to provide the scaffolding for children to develop self-efficacy, confidence and an appreciation of learning outside of the school classroom. The program aims to promote the fun in learning through hands on activities and interests outside of the classroom and linking community activities to everyday learning. Participants are provided with a Children’s University Passport and are provided with a stamp for every hour they engage in community activities, such as soccer training, visiting the local library, art gallery, museum, music lessons, the list is endless.

The registration day was held on site in the Learning Centre, in which 11 young people from Allambi entered. In addition to this there were young people from the five other NGOs in attendance, with 25 children on site. The participants were provided with 6 activities to rotate through over a period of 2.5 hours. This included the wonderful James from the Allambi Café conducting a cake decorating activity and Scott and Shelley, the LC Teachers, engaging the children in footy skills in the auditorium, three Uni students holding activities on bridge building, computer programming on Ipads, skateboard designs and an OT from Vision Australia who came with a retired Guide Dog to talk about the role of Guide Dogs. The night was a great success. We would like to thank everyone who participated. The director of the Children's University Australia will visit Allambi Care next week to discuss the success of the program.
