Brodii Ingram talks about a new program being piloted in Outreach:
As a Therapeutic Specialist at Allambi Care returning from Maternity Leave and coming into my UNE placement in SIL, I identified a significant barrier faced by the children and young people (C/YP) we support. Many were experiencing challenges with gaining their learner driver licence such as anxiety around testing, difficulties with reading and writing, and a lack of accessible support tailored to their needs.
Recognising that this was more than just a logistical hurdle but a critical step toward independence and opportunity, I reached out to Kylie Gibson at Gordon Driver Training. Together, we developed a workshop for Allambi Care participants, providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment to build confidence and prepare for the learner licence test.
The results have been inspiring. During the first workshop we had six young people successfully gain their learner licences. During the second workshop we had a further four young people achieve the same milestone. We have already secured two additional workshops for 2026, ensuring continued access and support.
This initiative is more than just a program, it’s a pathway to freedom, self-reliance, and personal growth. For many of these young people, obtaining a licence is a turning point that opens doors to employment, education, and social connection. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far and excited about the future of this partnership. A huge thank you to Kylie and the team at Gordon Driver Training for their commitment and collaboration.
