Carer Catch Up - Morning Tea

Save the date for another Carer Catch Up!

We’ll be hosting a morning tea on Tuesday, 25 November, from 10:00am to 12:00pm in the Mezzanine, and we’d love to see you there.

Our inaugural morning tea went by far too quickly — there was so much to chat about that we didn’t even make it to the planned activities. Come along, enjoy the informal space, and connect with other foster carers just like yourself.

The Annual Foster Care Christmas Party is back!

November 10 & 19, 10:30am to 12:30pm
November 11, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Online: Raising Teenagers

Raising teenagers can be both rewarding and challenging. This interactive workshop gives carers an understanding of adolescent development, the impact of trauma, and how these experiences can shape behaviour. The session explores why young people may respond in ways that are difficult to understand and offers approaches for building positive connections and supporting development.

Content includes:

  • Key stages of adolescent brain and social development

  • How trauma can affect thinking, emotions, and behaviour

  • Common behaviours that challenge and what they might mean

  • Approaches for building positive connections and supporting regulation

November 20, 11:00am to 12:00pm
Online: Catch Up for a Cuppa with Carers

This session is an open platform guided by a carer support team member, who will be there to answer your questions and provide resources to support you.

All sessions require registration. Visit Training opportunities for carers — Carers for Kids NSW if you would like to participate in any of these sessions.

Carer Training: Supporting Children & Carers

This was certainly a training not to be missed—rich in insight, full of heart, and served with delicious food and great company. Tyler and Megan shared their experiences and offered tips for managing behaviours while balancing self-care.

Tyler, Behavioural Specialist, shared his experiences working with children who have challenging behaviours and explained how routine structuring and skill building can create a more engaging and enjoyable life for both the children and their carers. He discussed how he uses the behavioural management system of token economy to encourage desired behaviours with rewards or privileges, and how these tokens can be tailored to each individual. Tyler demonstrated how a token economy is a powerful tool for modifying behaviours and supports the principles of reinforcement to encourage positive outcomes.

Megan, Senior Psychologist, led the second session and shared self-care strategies that carers and staff can use to look after their wellbeing while supporting the children in their care. She introduced the technique of box breathing and the practice of awareness of surroundings and feelings. We were shown how our fight, flight, and freeze reactions tie into the stress model of crisis, and how a scare every now and then can actually be beneficial. Wellbeing from the inside out.

Thanks, Tyler & Megan!
