Ongoing training - September 12, 2024

Thank you to all those Carers who attended the Family Connections and Culture training with the Cultural Team. The training was informative and thought provoking. It encouraged those attending to examine their beliefs and knowledge on the connections between family and culture. The highlight of the day was listening to Roma and Xavier talk about how much his restoration to family meant to them both and listening to Roma explain the painting she painted and gave to Allambi as a thank you.

How to help your child with sensory challenges

We all use our senses to understand the world around us. Touch, sound, sight, taste, smell, proprioception (body awareness) and vestibular (movement and balance) help us respond to what is happening to us and around us. When the brain has trouble processing these sensations, it can be harder for some children to feel comfortable or safe in their environment. This can lead to challenging behaviours which are their reaction to feeling disoriented. Here are some strategies that can help you manage your child while enabling them to feel more at ease and supported. This month we will cover teeth brushing and hatred of tags and seams in clothing.

  1. Hates brushing their teeth

What you might notice: Avoiding toothbrushing, gagging or being sensitive to the taste and texture of the toothpaste.

How you can help: Use a baby toothbrush with very soft bristles and no toothpaste initially. Work your way up to toothpaste over time. Offer chewing gum or a crunchy snack beforehand to desensitise their mouth. Try a vibrating toothbrush and let your child or young person be involved from the start of the task

  1. Hates tags or seams in their clothing

What you might notice: Refusing to wear certain clothes due to discomfort from tags, seams or scratchy materials.

How you can help: Use seamless clothing when possible. Tight-fitting or compression clothing may help reduce irritation. Apply deep pressure to the areas of the body where the tags or seams usually bother the child or young person.

Christmas Party

After such a successful party at Lambton pool last year, we have decided to re-book for this year. Save the date for December 4th and we will let you know details closer to the party. As usual, there will be yummy food and games, time on the water slide and a visit from Santa.

Interagency Foster and Kinship Carers Picnic

The picnic was a great success and all those who attended enjoyed the day. Free activities for children and carers, show bags, coffee cart for the carers, BBQ and some fantastic lucky ticket prizes made the day worthwhile.
