My Forever Family Events

Aug 9 – 10am Online: Trauma Informed Parenting

This session will be an exploration of Trauma Informed Parenting approaches that can help us to understand and appreciate the impact of trauma on children and adjust our parenting, discipline, routines and expectation to respond to their needs in a more trauma sensitive way. Just as we are learning new parental approaches, so too are the children learning new relational and regulation approaches. With learning and new skills we need time, patience, compassion and lots of practice.

Aug 10 – 7.30pm Online: Understanding adoption of children & young people in out-of-home care in NSW

This 2-hour training session will give an overview of what's involved in adopting a child or young person from out-of-home care.

Aug 17 – 7.30pm Online: Anxiety in children and carers

In this 1-hour webinar we delve into understanding how anxious feelings are created in our body, the many and varied ways anxiousness is expressed, and practical ways we can reduce anxious feelings in our children and in ourselves. Everyone feels anxious sometimes, but together we can learn ways to work with those feelings towards a calmer household and selves.

Aug 23 - 10am Online: Preparing to leave your care

Our young people are growing and getting ready to leave the system. The transition from adolescent to young adult is a tricky one, especially when our teens have experienced trauma. They find themselves in a developmental period where social interaction and connection to unpaid adults in their lives is so crucial.

Aug 30 – 10am Online: Understanding emotional regulation

The 1-hour online session of emotional regulation will explore the child’s working window of tolerance to understand and describe normal body and brain reactions after experiencing adversity and incorporate activities to help carers work through the stages of regulation with the children in their care.

Book Review - Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation

Looking for something new to read? There is no hiding that Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation by Paul Hawken is a call to action to address what has become a very real political issue across the globe. Saying that, imagine a National Geographic documentary in book form and that is what you are holding in your hands. This book has beautiful glossy photos and information about the ecosystems that is easily digested for the reader. Some of the highlights for me were coming to understand the importance of wetlands and mangroves, microgrids for energy generation, and the negative impact the fashion industry has on ecosystems. For example, I had never thought about what happens to clothing when it goes out of trend and can no longer be sold. The answer is actually quite shocking.

The contents of Regeneration includes: Oceans, Forests, Wilding, Land, People, The City, Food, Energy, Industry, Action & Connection. Then each chapter is broken down into 2 to 4 pages of information and photos explaining the ecosystem and its importance to us. Paul introduces the reader to things we may have never heard of such as the Azolla Fern, fire ecology, the importance of beavers, degraded land regeneration, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, and geothermal energy. All really interesting topics that can be a launching pad for the enquiring mind that loves to learn.

To end on a positive note, did you know that Melbourne is making itself into a 15-minute city? Imagine being able to access everything you need from health, education, shopping, entertainment, and government services all within a 15-minute walk from your front door. This book is truly for those who dream about an innovative future whether they are heading down the hill towards retirement like me, or still in high school about to be our future leaders. This book is worth it just for the photography and as such, is larger and more expensive than your average book. No matter what your belief about climate change this book is a must for the book shelf.
