Yaama Everyone,

Usually there would be a number of events happening in the sporting area for culture. In October every year there is the Annual NSW Aboriginal Koori Knockout tournament held over the October long weekend, this was going to be the 50th year of the tournament, but due to COVID19 it will be cancelled for another year. The tournament starts on Fridays with boys under 12-17’s, girls under 15-17 and the women’s games as well. Saturday and Sunday the winners would continue on, then come Monday its finals rugby league. Usually some of the current NRL players would be coming back to their community to play if they didn’t make the NRL grand finals series. Previous NRL players that had played in the Koori Knockout were Cody Walker, Ash Taylor, Latrell Mitchell, Josh Addo-Carr, and many more. If your young person is Aboriginal and is good at rugby league and would be interested in playing, please feel free contact our Cultural Therapeutic Case Manager Barry McGrady and Cultural Support Officer Cassandra McCarthy.

The annual Koori Netball tournament was also a great event usually hosted in Charlestown in October. This is played from juniors to seniors netball, with the women’s and mixed teams playing throughout the day. This year due to COVID 19 the event was also cancelled, but I think next year will be bigger and better than ever with teams coming from all over NSW. The Netball knockout is played out in one day. If your young person is Aboriginal, is playing netball and they would be interested in playing please feel free to contact our Cultural Therapeutic Case Manager Barry McGrady and Cultural Support Officer Cassandra McCarthy.
