May 2022 Update
- A number of Aboriginal organisations have been eagerly facilitating and running programs with our young boys and girls, with the goal to connect them to Culture. Some organisations have visited Allambi during May and have gained a better understanding of who Allambi is and what we do. Keep an eye and ear out for referrals of these programs for your young person, who may be interested in Aboriginal dance, mentoring, fitness, traditional games, bush tucker, visits to cultural significant places and cultural camping.
- Allambi Care held a Morning Tea event for community, with guest speakers and a film that linked to this year's Reconciliation Week's theme, “Be Brave and Make Change”. It was great to see all who came along and participated.
- Our Cultural Committee have some big plans for 2022, including Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week in July.
- We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our three new Cultural Committee members: Lakyn Haydon SHS Caseworker NSW, Shirley Arndell Caseworker VIC, and Sarah Simonis Caseworker VIC. Each member has a wealth of knowledge and experience with supporting our young people and connecting to community.
- The Cultural Committee also had an exciting opportunity to film with Bahtabah Land Council in May, capturing the local stories and meeting community members. It was great learning about the history of the area there.
Key Dates: Reconciliation Week
- Reconciliation Week runs from the 26th of May to the 3rd of June
It is a very important week for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is important because on the 26th of May 1967 the Australian constitution gave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the right to vote and also gave us our humans rights. Before that day Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were classed as Flora and Fauna, meaning plants and animals. This is why Reconciliation Week is important, but it is also an opportunity to work towards a better Australia as one, because there is still a divide with Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal, sometimes filled with racial remarks and discrimination.
- The theme for this year's Reconciliation Week is “Be Brave and Make Change”. In the words of Reconciliation Australia: “It is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to be Brave and tackle unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.”

Good News Story
